"Chavela" is the debut album of San Antonio,Texas based songwriter/vocalist, Isabel Paillao. The eponymously titled record, (“Chavela” being a Mexican nickname for “Isabel”), is a collection of tracks that have been polished by many years of live shows. The sound is as much a faithful nod to San Antonio's Westside Sound, as it is an exploration of neo-soul, country, and jazz. Paillao's songwriting and vocals are the heart of the record, and the band surrounding her builds a tasteful and dynamic foundation on which the songs are performed. The album opens with an intro that leads thelistener into Chavela's defining song, "Not Today," a warm and welcoming performance that is equal parts Norah Jones and Susan Tedeschi. The following trio of songs from "Huh" to "When Will I Get 2 U" begin to showcase the technical abilities of her rhythm section, bridging the gap of 70's singer-songwriter to a more modern progressive arrangement. Stand out tracks "There You Go" and "I Tried" show off her ear for non-traditional chord progressions, which fit in seamlessly with masterful performances from the horn section and piano player. The album is rounded out by "Impala Mama" (Chavela's unofficial theme song– an ode to her jade green 1970 Chevy Impala) and "Don't Forget," an epic finale for a bold debut. Chavela will see its release on October 17th, 2025 across all streaming platforms.
